<Wild Clay Research>는 도자 작가들과 협업하여 국내 각지의 야생흙을 탐구한다. 프로젝트는 다양한 지역과 지형에서 채집한 토양을 분석하고 도자 재료적 활용 방안을 연구하며, 국내 야생흙 연구의 공공 자료화를 목표로 한다. 이 과정을 통해 작가는 야생흙이라는 동시대적 데이터를 경험함으로써 재료를 수단으로 활용하는 데에서 나아가 땅과 사람의 근원적 관계를 고찰해 본다.
프로젝트를 통해 공개하는《뒹구는 돌은 언제 잠 깨는가》전은 2023년 4월부터 8월 사이 채집한 국내 열두 지역(가평, 광주, 경주, 남양주, 안동, 양주, 영월, 이천, 의성, 정선, 파주, 평창)의 토양 데이터와 야생 점토 샘플, 그리고 프로젝트를 진행하며 마주한 여섯 작가의 경험이 녹아든 작업을 공유한다. 땅을 통해 나와 우리를 구성하는 세계를 이해하고 지속가능한 재료와 삶을 탐구하는 새로운 관점을 제시한다.
<Wild Clay Research> is a collaborative project with ceramic artists that explores wild clay found across various regions of South Korea. The project involves collecting and analyzing soil from diverse local landscapes, researching its potential as a ceramic material, and aims to create a publicly accessible archive of wild clay data. Through this process, the artist engages with wild clay as a form of contemporary data, moving beyond the material as a mere medium, and instead reflecting on the fundamental relationship between land and people.
The exhibition《When Do Rolling Stones Wake Up》, presented as part of the project, shares soil data and wild clay samples collected from twelve regions across Korea between April and August 2023 — including Gapyeong, Gwangju, Gyeongju, Namyangju, Andong, Yangju, Yeongwol, Icheon, Uiseong, Jeongseon, Paju, and Pyeongchang. It also features works shaped by the experiences of six participating artists who engaged with the land throughout the project. The exhibition offers a new perspective on understanding the world that forms “me” and “us” through the land, while exploring sustainable materials and ways of living.
